Saltwater Fishing Tips - Advice On Catching Fish In Saltwater

Every angler has a choice of fishing either in the river or in the open sea. Though each type of fishing has its own challenges, the important thing to remember is to have patience waiting for the fish and trying your best to catch it when it appears.

To be able to fish, the basic thing which a person needs is a fishing license. This is a legal requirement. The regulations regarding fishing vary from state to state, but fishing license is usually a must.

For salt water fishing, the first requirement is to have a boat. The boat can be as simple as a row boat or as big as a yacht. The size of this vessel depends on how many people will join the trip.

In case of in-shore salt water fishing, a 15 foot sailboat that comes with a cuddy forward to serve as a shelter when it rains should do the job. The boat should not be heavy and yet adequately sturdy to not be swayed by the action of strong waves or some bumps on the beach or on the rocks.

One should always try the edges of the perimeter first instead of plopping bait or lure in the middle. This is because it will scare the other fish away. By going through the sides first, one will have a better chance of catching unsuspecting fish in the middle.

If one decides to go "down below" some time, a cod-line is a necessity for everybody to enjoy saltwater fishing. A perch-line will also be good and if it's time for mackerel fishing, a mackerel jig will be an excellent help.

What is the right time to start salt water fishing? The ideal timing for fishing is when there is an ebb tide. This should be during an early morning time to ensure that the trip will be a productive one. This will put the tide in one?s favor and if the wind is light or not fair, this will also help in going home quickly.

The best place to start fishing is going to a fishing ground that is well known to the locals.

It?s important to keep patience while fishing. Many impatient anglers move from one spot to another which at times makes these people miss a hotspot further decreasing the chances of catching fish. As a rule of thumb, you need to cast out a couple of times before moving on or before using different types of bait. Follow this advice by fishing from the shallowest to the deepest point.

People often get disrupted in catching fish by presence of sharks in the area. One way to distract the sharks is by pouring some fish blood on a paper towel or newspaper and rolling it into a ball, and then casting it overboard. Sharks will usually follow the current and leave the area increasing the chances of catching fish.

Advice and tips above should make your fishing in salt water, a pleasant and a successful experience.

Get your hands on 5 free of charge saltwater fishing tips lessons by visiting helpful fishing magazines. Be sure to check out the resources on the best fly tying supplies as these will greatly help you improve your fly fishing skills.

New York Fishing

It might be known as "The Big A[pple", but it could just as easily be called "The Anglers Friend" because of all the fishing opportunities that the state of New York has to offer. New York is a large state and there's plenty of room for not only freshwater, but also saltwater fishing. The state of New York also has decent runs of great lake running steelhead and salmon (that's right, steelhead and salmon don't have to run to the ocean. The great lakes work fine as well). All types of fishing are available in New York, for everyone from a beginning to the professional angler.

Whether you enjoy salmon fishing on Lake Ontario, fly fishing for steelhead on the Salmon River, or deep sea fishing from Montauk for mako-shark, the fishing in New York offers something for almost everyone, and many people overlook it. New York charter boats are available for freshwater fishing on Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, or Lake Champlain for salmon, steelhead, lake trout, walleye, as well as other fish. There are also many charter boats that are available for phenomenal saltwater fishing on Long Island from locations such as Freeport, Orient Point, and Montauk. The point is that if you are an angler, New York has plenty of fish for you.

New York is such a large state with so many bodies of water that fishing rules can become quite tricky. Make sure you check the regulations on whatever body of water that you're planning on fishing. One thing is for sure, the use of worms is perfectly legal, and it's always a good idea to have an efficient way to carry your worms. The days of carrying around those bulky Styrofoam containers are gone, and you may want to look into getting a bait bag to carry your worms while fishing in the great state of New York. You can either make one yourself or get one from JRWfishing; the point is that you should have one.

If you're a resident of New York a fishing license is going to cost you from $20 to $75, depending on what you're fishing for and what you want to do. Again, these rules can get a bit confusing. If you're a non-resident a license will run you around $40. New York also has lifetime licenses available for those of you who aren't leaving the state. Lifetime licenses are from $60 to $350 dollars, depending on your age.

The bottom line is that no matter what species of fish you're looking for and no matter what method you use for catching those fish, the great state of New York has something for you. The state has so much to offer the average angler; they may never have to fish anywhere else. They call New York the center of the world; well it could be considered the center of the fishing world as well. If you like the sport of fishing, the great state of New York is most certainly worth investigating.

Fishing with John

Fishing with John
This is a love story; an unlikely convergence of two people from different worlds who were able to make a rich and tender life together, and not only endure each other's company in alarmingly close quarters but revel in it.

Edith Iglauer was born in Cleveland and lived an urban, sophisticated life in New York until she met and married John Daly, a commercial fisherman in British Columbia. She spent more than four years on his forty-one-foot troller, the Morekelp until his sudden death.

John Daly was an impassioned and greatly talented fisherman who was convinced that he could "think like a fish"; an amateur philosopher who worked out, and followed, an orginal set of beliefs and principles; a mystic who, after forty years of fishing, felt himself to be at one with the sea and the mountains along the British Columbia coast; a scholarly looking, high-spirited, full-blown eccentric who covered the white walls of his pilothouse with his favorite quotations in bold black letters ("Lawyers spend their professional careers shoveling smoke. O.W. Holmes")

Fishing with John established Edith Iglauer as one of BC's most popular writers. This unusual West Coast love story sold 16,000 copies in hardcover and continues to be a bestseller in paperback.

What Does It Mean if You Get Stung by a Sting Ray - Fishing the Shore of Little Gasparilla Island

One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited is a small island off the gulf coast of Florida known as Palm Island. Also know as Little Gasparilla Island, this place is a true island with no land bridge. You can only get there by ferry or private boat. The inter-coastal waterway (Lemon Bay) empties into the Atlantic Ocean along the north side of Palm Island in a waterway known as Stump Pass.

The fishing is not as great in Lemon Bay as it once was and it is not as productive as Gaspirilla Pass or Charlotte Harbor, but it can be fished from the shore of Palm Island without a boat. This means I can fish day and night while my family is enjoying other aspects of our family vacation.
My typical fishing outings are one week trips with at least some fishing every day. Almost every trip to Palm Island... I have been there at least 25 times... I go out once or twice with my favorite guide Captain Les Hill. Les has been a professional guide for just about as long as I have been fishing in the Charlotte Harbor area. We have caught as many as 13 different specials on a weekend trip. But the favorites each for a different include Redfish, Snook, Flounder, Spanish Mackeral, Sea Trout, Lady Fish, Tarpon (I still have not caught one of these), a variety of Shark, Mangrove Snapper, young Grouper, Jack, and Sting Ray.

One beautiful morning just after sunrise, I was fishing in the shallow water on the north edge of Palm Island. I had waded into about a foot of water perhaps 15 feet off the shore. The Snook come charging in and out of these waters, and with light tackle the experience of catching one is enough to get anyone hooked on back water fishing.

After an hour or so, (time moves pretty fast when you are in paradise) I was stunned by the instant intense pain in my leg. As I looked down, I saw a sting ray dashing away as if I had just attacked him. Being from Cleveland, I had no idea just how serious this might be. The little guy swimming away was only about 15 inches in diameter.

The pain was so intense all I could think of, was that I had just been stung by a venomous creature from the ocean, and that I was going to die. My thoughts shifted quickly to perhaps I won't die, but they might have to cut off my leg! Truly, friends, the pain was sharp, and penetrating, and throbbing. I was at least 20 minutes from my condominium, and in my mind, I figured I could be dead before I would make it back.

So in an act of desperation, I shouted out to a fisherman in a boat... "What do you do if you get stung by a Sting Ray". Since he was quite a way out it sounded like ?Whaaat dooo youuu dooo if youuu get stunnnng by a stinnng Raaay?. As if he could read my mind, he shouted back "You wonnnt diiiie". With that bit of comfort, and encouragement, I had the strength to hobble over to my golf cart, and begin the journey back to my condo. All the way back I remember mumbling, "Oh my God, Oh my God". At one point it hurt so bad, I began to laugh!

As it turns out, hot water as hot as you can stand it, will de-nature the venom from the sting ray. So once I got back, a nice foot bath in scalding hot water terminated about 95% of the pain in no more than 20 minutes. So after breakfast and a few hours in the pool, I was back on the beach fishing.

Ah but this story has an interesting twist. About two weeks after I got home to Cleveland, my ankle swelled up to the size of a grapefruit. So now I am thinking, I was right all along. They are going to have to amputate my leg.

I made an appointment to go to the Cleveland Clinic, but on my way out the door I got to thinking... these guys at the Cleveland Clinic have never seen a sting ray infection, and given the change, who knows what they might try. So I hopped on the internet and after a few minutes, I found a nice article on venomous marine life. It contained detailed recommendations for treating the secondary infection often caused by the shattered barb left behind from a sting ray. This was too funny. I highlighted the recommended antibiotic, and treatment; and went to see the Doc. Just as I had imagined, the Doc had no idea what to do with my leg.

So once Doc Wu began scratching his head, I explain, "Doc, I don't want to be presumptious, but I did a little research and here is the recommended treatment for an infection resulting from a sting ray attack." The doctor read the few paragraphs, nodded his head, wrote a script for prescription, cleaned out the barb as recommended, sent me home, and sent me a bill.
So that is what you do if you get stung by a sting ray.

Hemingway on Fishing

Hemingway on Fishing
From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fisherman. He fished the lakes and creeks near the family's summer home at Walloon Lake, Michigan, and his first stories and reportages were often about his favorite sport. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, are all of his great writings about the many kinds of fishing he did -- from trout in the rivers of northern Michigan to marlin in the Gulf Stream.

In A Moveable Feast, Hemingway speaks of sitting in a café in Paris and writing about what he knew best -- and when it came time to stop, he "did not want to leave the river." The story was the unforgettable classic, "Big Two-Hearted River," and from its first words we do not want to leave the river either. He also wrote articles for the Toronto Star on fishing in Canada and Europe and, later, articles for Esquire about his growing passion for big-game fishing. His last books, The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream, celebrate his vast knowledge of the ocean and his affection for its great denizens.

Hemingway on Fishing is an encompassing, diverse, and fascinating collection. From the early Nick Adams stories and the memorable chapters on fishing the Irati River in The Sun Also Rises to such late novels as Islands in the Stream, this collection traces the evolution of a great writer's passion; the range of his interests; the sure use he made of fishing, transforming it into the stuff of great literature.

Anglers and lovers of great writing alike will welcome this important collection.

Ice Fishing: Fun Or Torture?

I've never quite answered this question, although I'm definitely leaning towards torture. There is just something unsettling about standing on a frozen lake cranking an auger like you're drilling to the center of the earth for a half an hour before the "fishing" can even begin. Then the problem is that you're sweaty from drilling holes in the ice and the air temperature is below freezing. These two factors go together like oil and water, and the next thing you know you feel like a human Popsicle, and you're spending the next hour trying to warm up.

At this point in the ice fishing excursion, it's time to start drinking. And that's precisely what I used to do, and let me tell you something, it made ice fishing fun! Sitting on the ice, sipping on alcohol, B.S'ing with your fishing partner, choking down lung darts (or cigarettes-to the uninitiated), and waiting for a fish to bite. This scenario isn't so bad, in fact it's really a good time.

Now I don't drink anymore. I gave it up for personal reasons. Hell I figured that I had lived my life for twenty years while drinking and hadn't progressed much. So I figured I'd give this thing called life a shot without drinking and see what happens.

Then I tried ice fishing minus the drinking. And guess what happened? This is where the question of torture comes in because I surely don't have the same experience while ice fishing these days. Now ice fishing is just a couple of hours sitting on the ice, freezing my ASS off. Hence the question about torture.

So I guess in my personal situation, the answer to the question comes down to whether or not I'm drinking. You can obviously answer the question for yourself. If you somehow enjoy sitting on a frozen lake sipping hot coffee, hoping a fish will bite, more power to you. You're obviously a bigger man than me.
