The Best Fly Fishing Rods

Most fly fishermen take the sport very seriously. Going beyond the fact that it is a way to catch fish and also to enjoy the outdoors, fly fishermen think of what they do as an art, and rightly so. Fly fishing is much more involved than regular fishing, and it takes practice and dedication to learn the intricacies of the sport. Most fly fishermen will tell you, however, that it is definitely worth it.

When learning how to fly fish, or if you have already been doing it for a while, having the right fly fishing rod is essential. There are several types of fly fishing rods on the market, and which one you choose to use is a matter of personal preference, your fly fishing style, and what you are most comfortable with.

Bamboo fly fishing rods ? Talk to many fly fishing enthusiasts and you will hear a lot of good things about bamboo fly fishing rods. Many fly fishermen swear by them, saying they are the best type of fly fishing rod that you can use. Although this is obviously a matter of opinion, there are a lot of positive features in a bamboo fly fishing rod. Bamboo fly fishing rods were one of the first fly fishing rods used, and it is a tribute to their popularity that they are still being made today. These fishing rods are light, flexible, and they have a nice slow action that means they are ideal for those who practice a more refined method of fly fishing. Making bamboo fly fishing rods is a delicate and exact process, and for this reason they tend to be the most expensive fly fishing rods that you can buy.

Graphite fly fishing rods ? Fly fishing rods made of graphite tend to be quite stiff, but this doesn?t mean that they are not effective. This type of fly fishing rod is very strong, although the strength can vary depending on the quality. Fly fishermen like the performance and durability that they get from graphite fly fishing rods. They can vary in price and design, so if you are a beginner at fly fishing, you should bring along someone who can help you pick out just the right graphite rod for you.

Fiberglass fly fishing rods ? These days, a large number of fishing rods, whether they are for fly fishing or ?regular? fishing, are made from fiberglass. Fiberglass is strong, durable, and flexible, making it perfect as a material for fishing rods. The drawback to fiberglass fishing rods is that, compared to bamboo and graphite rods, they are relatively heavier. This means that fly fishermen who are using fiberglass fishing rods may find that their arms feel a little more tired and achy at the end of the day. All in all, though, their strength and their ability to take a lot of punishment make them a popular choice.

Rocky Mountains Fly Fishing: Attitude and Altitude

It is exotic fishing in Alberta's Rocky Mountains, where you can savour wide-open spaces, breath-taking scenery and utter solitude. Your attitude shifts with the altitude, bringing your appetite for fishing up a few pleasurable notches.

Crystal clear streams flow through valley bottoms. Unspoiled wilderness flanks the riverbanks. Big game is never far away. Soaring mountain peaks compete with bountiful fish for anglers' attention. And there's not another fisherman - or fisherwoman - for miles.

All these facets of fly fishing the Canadian Rocky Mountains Rockies ensure an unparalleled North American fishing experience.

Fishing licenses, which come in a variety of time frames, are both inexpensive and readily available.

Whether you're drawn to the great fishing in the meandering Upper Bow River, the solitude of remote streams around Crowsnest Pass or the unspoiled beauty of Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, all are within a pleasant drive of the international gateway cities of Calgary and Edmonton.

Focus on Fishing in Spectacular Scenery

"It's stunning, the majesty of the Canadian Rockies," says Dan Bell, owner of Upper Bow Fly Fishing in Banff, which is in Banff National Park. "It's a pleasant distraction to focus on the fishing when you have so much spectacular scenery."

But a tug on the line will refocus even the most awestruck.

While catch-and-release has been the rule in Alberta's rivers and streams in recent years, the measure has dramatically increased the size of available fish.

The average size is 30 centimetres, but fish now get as big as 45 cms, though that's not as common, says Kim Straker, owner of Calgary-based Clearwater Adventures.

"The bull trout get pretty big and very aggressive," he says, adding that the solitude in the Rockies and the quality of fishing is what makes it so great.

"I've fished quite a bit in Montana and there's more pressure there," he says. "Here, you don't deal with the crowds. The fishing in many instances is just as good and the scenery is at least as beautiful, if not more so."

The streams and rivers in Alberta's Rockies are teeming with Westslope cutthroat, bull, rainbow, brown and brook trout as well as whitefish. Dolly Varden and splake can also be found in select lakes and rivers. The species vary on location but local guides will ensure each angler gets what he or she came for.

At the northern end of the Rockies, Barry Wood takes his clients fishing on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. Wood is owner and guide of Maligne Tours Limited. He takes his clients out on the lake when there's too much sediment in the rivers during the spring runoff.

No Crowds, Only Fish

"The fishing's unbelievable," he says. "There's no people and no crowds. My clients enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains. I get people who want to catch fish and others who don't even care."

Given the strong attraction of the environment, it seems like icing on the cake that the fishing is so good. Wood says that in five hours of fishing, he can catch as many as 40 fish.

"If you go fishing in Montana, it's wall-to-wall fishermen," he says.
"Here, you've got more diversity and the peaks are a lot more spectacular."

Straker knows what he's talking about. For instance, the highway between Jasper and Banff is off-limits to commercial traffic and the highway is maintained just for tourism. It is one of the most spectacular drives on the planet and it's a region to which Dan Bell also takes his clients.

In these rivers the fly-fishing is great, says Bell, whether it be streamer, nymphing or dry flying. He adds that while the Upper Bow is arguably the most beautiful stream in the world, other streams, like the Ram River, are quite isolated and beautiful and there are lots of big cutthroat and wild animals.

Between Jasper and Banff National Park are countless streams and rivers, all isolated and protected within national park boundaries. There are also great rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout in Kananaskis Country (which is less than an hour's drive from Calgary), and southeast of Banff National Park.

Alberta's Rockies run in one continuous spine from Jasper down to the Crowsnest Pass, near the U.S. border. Throughout the entire range, rivers and streams are plentiful and population sparse. The whole region is home to deer, waterfowl, ospreys, eagles, bears, moose, elk and a variety of other wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Heading south, the Rockies look different than Jasper, but they remain just as wild and spectacular. Crowsnest Pass, located in the southernmost Rockies, is situated in a windy valley just before the mountain range crosses the border into the United States. It's home to the Crowsnest, Old Man, Livingstone and Castle Rivers.

Women Only Packages

While guides and guiding companies will help anglers find the solitude, scenery and fish they're looking for in the area's rivers and lakes, only the Angler's Ridge Bed & Breakfast offers women-only packages.

Wendy Meerveld, owner and operator of Angler's Ridge, along with a little help from partner companies Saddle Mountain Ridge and Tread Softly, teaches her female clients to fly-fish. At day's end, there's yoga, meditation and Reiki, a spiritual-healing exercise. There's also emphasis on healthy eating and wellness living.

"In three days the women reach total relaxation," says Meerveld. "We take someone from the city who's all hyped up and stressed and they go back utterly relaxed and wishing they could stay."

Though Meerveld and her two business partners have only offered the program for one year, she says there's been lots of positive feedback.

"Women think fishing is a man's sport, but they're catching on," she says. "When you're fly fishing, you have the river coming at you and its very tranquil."

But Angler's Ridge B&B isn't just for women. As the name would suggest, it's one of the few accommodations that caters specifically to anglers.

"I cater to the fly-fishermen," says Meerveld. "I pack them a lunch and if they want to rise at 5 a.m. then I make them breakfast at 5 a.m. We also give them tips because my husband and I are fly-fishermen. We know the areas really well, we tie flies and we can give them tips."

Choose The Right Fly Fishing Equipment And Be Successful

When it comes to fly fishing, attitude is half of the battle. You need to be able to switch on to a calm mindset that allows you to keep repeating the same technique without becoming frustrated. You must be able to use the surrounding natural beauty as a means of tempering your impatience. It requires forethought, dedication and commitment.

The other half of fly fishing is the equipment. One wise commentator once noted that whoever said one could not buy happiness had never invested in a new fly fishing rod. Now we may well smile at that and think it a bit far fetched, but, there is no doubt that the proper equipment will go a long way toward creating fly fishing success.

Certainly you need things such as a hat to protect the head from sunburn and the occasionally miscast fly and a pair of good sunglasses can make the difference between a painful squint and wonderful look at a natural vista, but the actual tackle that you use is probably the most important aspect of the equipment portion of the fly fishing equation.

However, if you have ever bought equipment before you will know that making tackle and equipment decisions can be challenging. Consider all of the choices an angler must make.

Is an old-fashioned bamboo rod with its natural flexibility the best choice for a day on the creek, or would you be better served by a new composite graphite rod with a far different, but equally enticing whipping action? When choosing a rod, should the fisher look for a particular brand, or are all models of fly fishing rods created at least close to equal? And what about length? Is there a reason to prefer or pass over that slightly longer model seen at the local sporting goods store? Answers to these questions will have a real impact on your success when you go to cast your fly.

Speaking of flies, this is another area where decisions are critical. Are you going to go for a dry fly strategy, or do you plan to use insect replicas? Is there a color to prefer for the morning as opposed to the evening? Will those trout really even notice the difference between your flies or will any in your collection do the trick as twilight hits? Before you even get that far in the process, you have to decide whether you should learn to tie your own or if you are better off relying upon professionally produced flies for your excursions.

The choice of rod and fly is also going to influence decisions regarding the line you use. The size of the target fish may force you to decide to use a lighter or heavier test line. Some lines float, while others will slowly sink to the bottom. Which lines make the most sense for which kinds of casts, strategies and conditions?

There are those who fish with a stick, a string, a worm and a hook. If they are exceptionally advanced, they may add a bobber to their repertoire before dipping their line and taking a nap under a tree by the side of a slow moving creek or dead still lake. That may be a fine strategy for enticing wobbly out from the muddy banks, but that kind of simplicity does not really work for those choosing to fly fish.

Fly fishing is a more complicated proposition, in terms of both mindset and equipment. Both are essential to success. Tackle decisions can and often will make the difference between a catchless day and hitting the limit.

This is why anyone considering fly fishing must learn how to make the right choices. Even a Zen master of an angler will have a disappointing day if his equipment is not up to the task. All fly fishers must take the time to research the sport, the rods, the reels, the flies, the lines and everything else in order to increase their chance of reeling in an impressive trophy catch.

If you are a potential fly fisher and are confounded by the choices available to you, find a solid reference manual that will provide you with answers that can empower you throughout your fly fishing decision making process.

Orvis Pocket Guide to Fly Fishing for Steelhead: Flies, Gear, and Strategies for Taking Fish in Rivers and Streams (Orvis)

For generations, steelhead have captured and captivated the hearts, minds, and souls of fly anglers in the Pacific Northwest. These remarkable sea-going salmonids, reign as one of North America's greatest gamefish, akin to the Atlantic salmon of eastern Canada or the Florida-strain largemouth bass of the South.
With decades of steelhead experience under his belt, Shewey takes both the novice and experienced angler deep into steelhead territory. In his clear and entertaining style, Shewey covers everything the prospective steelhead hunter will want to know.
Beginning with biology, he explains the differences between steelhead and the more common Pacific salmon, and goes on to explain the differences between summer and winter steelhead, how they differ from rainbow trout, and why they're relatively uncommon. Following chapters provide information about rods, reels, lines; flies; casting techniques; reading steelhead water; wading gear; and the ethics and etiquette of the sport.
Taking steelhead on a fly represents one of the ultimate expressions of the artistic nature of fly fishing, and this is the ultimate guide.

Fly Fishing ? Where Sport And Craft Combine

There is no sport as versatile or as widespread as fishing. It is a sport that can be undertaken as cheaply or as expensively as you wish. Five year olds in bare feet and overalls can attach a piece of string to a stick, bend a paper clip, and attach a worm and have as much fun as the billionaire fishing enthusiast with a deep sea fishing boat, lines, tackles, rigging, harpoons, shades and champagne. Fishing is a hobby and a living, a sport and a serious occupation.

One of the most popular methods of fishing is fly fishing. Fly fishing is done with a specially designed rod and reel combination that allows the sportsperson to cast their line in the direction of the water and then slowly reel it back in.

Fly fishing is appropriately named. In contrast to lure fishing, fly fishing requires the fisherman to fool the fish into thinking that the fly is one of the fish?s favorite meals skimming along the surface of the water. Lure fishing appeals to the lazy underwater fish, often attracted by shiny metallic objects and enticed to bite on the hook with some piece of edible or edible appearing bait.

Fly fishing is designed to attract fish at specific times of day by their feeding instincts. The lures for fly fishing are called flies, and are in fact a cheaper way to go, generally speaking, than the lures needed in lure fishing. Fly fishers often tie their own flies, using bits of hair and cloth around the house or farm.

Flies are designed to appear as the kind of prey that fish in the specific area are feeding on at a given time. This can include all manner of insects and insect larvae.

Though it rankles on the lure fisher to have it said, fly fishing is a much more challenging form of the sport. The fly fisher must constantly have her arm in motion, casting the line, playing it out and reeling it in patterns made to emulate the movement of the prey species. When a fish is hooked, it takes a skilled fisher to land the animal.

Fly fishing also involves a certain amount of study, in order for the venture to be successful. Fishers must do their research into what kind of species they are hoping to catch, and in turn what kind of species their targets are feeding on. This information can change seasonally, day to day, and even has different applications during different feeding times.

Fly fishing is an excellent way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air while participating in an enjoyable sport and getting some exercise. It takes some practice, but is highly addictive and a sport that never gets old.

Fishing Gear: Purchase Quality Or Quantity?

If you walk into your local fishing shop, you are likely to find a wide range of fishing gear. For the beginner, it can be hard to determine just what is out there and what you should be purchasing. While you may want to purchase products and gear that are specific to your tastes, it is much more important to purchase products that are of high quality instead. So, what do you look for and how do you know what to get? To know, here are some guidelines you should follow.

* First, determine what type of fish, what type of fishing and where you are headed to fish. Fishing gear is specific first to the type of fishing that you plan to do. You'll need a different fishing rod for saltwater fishing than you will for freshwater fishing. Now, on to what type of fish you are after. You'll need to know what weight of line you should purchase as well. You may need a heavier line if you are heading out for King Salmon rather than the small trout in your local pond. And, when it comes to the area, you'll also need to know what the fish like. Some lures work on fish better than others. You can find this out by talking to the local fishing tackle employee.
* How much to purchase depends on what you plan to invest. The more that you purchase, though does nothing to make you a better fisherman. What you need is to insure that you get quality products that will withstand your adventure. Quality is always necessary.
* For the beginner, knowledge is also the key to success. If you haven't been out there just yet, you should take along an experienced individual to help you. That way you get the best results and you get the education you need to do it on your own next time.

Fishing gear is fishing gear, right? It is not all the same and it is not easy to purchase unless you know what to get. The best way to know what to take with you on your next fishing adventure is to ask the local fishing tackle specialist in that area. They will be glad to tell you all that you need to know to head out. And, they may even tell you where a great fishing spot is located too.

Deep Sea Fishing Tips

Deep sea fishing is a wonderful and extremely enjoyable activity. Here are some tips that will make your salt water fishing adventure even better.

1. Watch the signs

If you see birds e.g. Seagulls that are feasting on small bait-type fishes, there are probably larger game-type fish below the surface of the water. Also, look for floating wood or debris. In most cases when you chance upon a large floating wood, you would find a large game fish in the area even encountering dolphin.

2. Stop, Snook and Listen

Fishing for snooks is quite similar as fishing for bass. Snooks like to be around ledges, posts and rocks.

3. Crabs for full moon

During full moons use soft crab imitations as bait. That's the time when crabs shed their shells and stripers come looking for them.

4. If you're looking for tunas, find the dolphins

Yellowfin tuna are usually found schooling with dolphins. So if you see a group of dolphins, chances are there are some tuna in the area.

5. Cut and Burn

If you have trouble cutting through a spiderwire braid, try using a lighter or a match.

6. Good Reef

The best place to fish is near reefs since big game fish feed on fish that live on reefs.

7. The Circle Hook

Use a circle hook if you would like a higher hook up ratio. These hooks guarantees more catch, because of the minute gap, and the reverse point. They are generally better for the fish since they do not hook in the gut just the lip.

8. Don't have sea legs

Watch the horizon and stay on deck. These would generally help you if you're having trouble with sea sickness: Stay away from the boat fumes, breathing it only exacerbates the problem.

9. Anchors away

When your anchor is stuck at the bottom, try attaching a float to it. Return after the tide has changed in direction. This should be enough to loosen the anchor.

10. Fish where the fish are

A lot of fisherman have the idea that they should be catching their live baits over the reefs before going to deep waters. If the live baits are not in the area you're planning to catch the larger games, then why would you come up with the idea that the large fish are there. Wouldn't they be in the area where the bait fish are?

Carp Fishing on Valium

Carp Fishing on Valium
Graham Parker has released over 20 albums, including Squeezing Out Sparks, considered one of the great rock and roll albums of all time. Now, Graham stakes his claim in the literary world with Carp Fishing on Valium. Carp is the story of Brian Porker, an aging rock star, told in a series of episodes from his life: as a nature-loving lad who collects eggs; a high-living rock singer auditioning to replace the "newly deceased" Mick Jagger; and in his final guise as an ornithologist comedian. Witty, absurd, and keenly insightful, Carp Fishing on Valium has established Graham Parker on the literary scene in the same wickedly incisive way he turned rock on its ear.AUTHORBIO: Graham Parker, whose classic albums include Howlin' Wind, Heat Treatment, and Struck by Lightning, divides his time between the wilds of upstate New York and London.
